When I began outlining Maybe Someone Like You, the female protagonist, Katie Capwell, was drawn to a dance studio where she would learn ballroom dancing from a sexy dance instructor. (Yes, I still love the movie, Dirty Dancing!) But as I started writing, I found myself struggling to make those scenes come alive. Even though I had done some online research, I didn’t have the grasp of ballroom dancing I wanted. So instead of taking dance classes (which very well could’ve been a disaster—I’m not graceful), I thought about what I do know. And that’s kickboxing. It’s a sport I started a few years ago. Here’s a video of me with one of my trainers:
There was a gym I passed all the time, and outside was a sign that said, “Women’s Kickboxing.” I was intrigued, but scared to give it a try. Finally, I worked up the courage to walk in and sign up for a trial. I’ll admit, after that first workout, I thought I might pass out on the pavement, but at the same time, I couldn’t wait to go back. There’s something immensely satisfying about punching a bag! So, I tapped into those feelings, swapped Katie’s dancing shoes for sneakers, and she started kickboxing with Ryan Brincatt, a super-hot kickboxing instructor. Katie struggles with her new career as a young attorney, and kickboxing becomes an outlet for her. It doesn’t hurt that Ryan has an irresistible smile and winning personality. I loved writing these characters, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading Maybe Someone Like You!

Katie Capwell is a bright and accomplished recent law school graduate, and she has her shiny future all mapped out. It’s brimming with courtroom victories and creating change. Ryan Brincatt is a tattooed and impossibly cool martial artist, and he’s mastered a fierce roundhouse kick.
Their paths never should have crossed.
But when Katie lurks outside the kickboxing gym where Ryan works as a trainer, she’s immediately drawn to his casual confidence and playful green eyes. Without making her usual list of pros and cons, she impulsively signs up to train with him.
She never imagined that one decision would change. Absolutely. Everything.
