Icebergs are huge chunks of ice that have broken off the edges of glaciers and slipped into the sea. These giants slowly make their way into the sea currents and head south. And one of the best places in the world to see them is an area off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador known as Iceberg Alley. It is the glaciers of Western Greenland that make their way to Iceberg Alley.
These icebergs are thousands of years old. They’re even older then the drakons in my Blood of the Drakon series. Who knows, maybe there is even a water drakon living somewhere up in the Arctic. When you think about it, it’s the perfect place for a drakon who prefers privacy. Maybe a nice ice cave somewhere.
Icebergs are actually made from fresh water, and because they were formed so long ago, they are actually made up of some of the purest water on the planet. The clear bluish lines you see on some of them are formed when meltwater fills surrounding crevasses and later freezes.
We ventured out in boat on a rather windy day with the waves rocking us as we made our way out to see these massive giants. They are incredible when you see them up close. Our boat was so puny in comparison. We circled the bergs, admiring them from all sides. On the boat trip, we actually got a few small chunks that had broken off and used it in our drinks later that evening. Pretty cool.
The thing to remember is that icebergs are unstable once they’ve reached the warmer climates. The day before when viewing some icebergs from land, a smaller one actually fell apart just seconds after we left the area. We only found out when we stopped there again on our way back.
They are awe-inspiring giants that have been around during the past 10,000 years of human history. Amazing.

He’ll do anything in his power to protect her.
Darius Varkas is a drakon. He’s neither human nor dragon.
He’s both.
He’s also the target of an ancient order who want to capture all drakons for their blood. When fresh, a drakon’s blood can cure any illness and prolong a human’s life, and the Knights will stop at nothing to get it.
When librarian Sarah Anderson stumbles across a rare book belonging to the Knights of the Dragon, she’s quickly thrust into a dangerous world of secrets and shifters and things she never would have believed possible. When the Knights realize Sarah has a secret of her own, she becomes just as much a target as Darius. Her scary dragon shifter just might be her best chance at survival.
Once upon a time N.J. had the idea that she would like to quit her job at the bookstore, sell everything she owned, leave her hometown, and write romance novels in a place where no one knew her. And she did. Two years later, she went back to the bookstore and her hometown and settled in for another seven years. One day she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first erotic romance novel and life would never be the same. N.J. has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.
That is so cool! I have never seen one up close. What a treat that would be to do so. Your very lucky to have had the chance to do this and to drink from them as well with their little ice berg cubes. I would not be surprised to see a frozen drakon somewhere. There is much hidden from us with good reason. Thank you for sharing this with us.
They are amazing close up, Mary. I’ve been lucky enough to see many of them. And there might be a frozen dragon. :)
